“Aires”, Normandy and Brittany – almost!

We’d just had two weeks in the Netherlands and it’s fair to say that the weather while we were here was pretty lousy. It was cold and wet, and so disappointing after our amazingly hot Easter. We still had a few weeks left on our trip and on sudden impulse we decided to head south into France to try and find some sun.  In all our travels we’ve never been down the western side of France, and for years Carol’s been desperate to visit Mont Saint Michel, so we decided […]

Europe Here We Come

“E” Day for the HappiHalls is finally here. Here we are at Harwich Docks waiting for this evening’s ferry to take us across to the continent for the start of our European travels, and our first attempt at finding some winter sun. We’ll be back in March or April. How excited are we!!! It’s only been seven months since we rented out our house, moved into our Motorhome, and set off on our Scottish tour but it feels so much longer. When we wake up on the ferry tomorrow morning […]

Holidays, Holidays…

Its been five weeks since our last blog post, four weeks since we left our house, and four weeks we’ve now been resident in our new “home on the road”….well, almost! We’ve been parked up at mum and dad’s for the past couple of weeks and mum wouldn’t dream of letting us sleep on the drive! We’re desperate to start our life on the road proper, but – poor us – we’ve had all sorts of holidays in the way before we can make our final getaway. Retired life can […]

Our life on the road begins

Our new life has started, and what an adventure we’ve got planned. The places we’ll go, the things we’ll see, the freedom to travel and go wherever we fancy. What started as a bit of dream just six months ago passed its biggest milestone when we handed over our keys and drove away from our house on Sunday. We’ve still got a few weeks before we really hit the road and start our adventure; we’ve got a couple of weeks around Cambridge while Carol finishes off at work, some family […]

The final countdown has begun…we’re off in 6 days

As we sit here in the lounge at home, in our comfy(!) garden chairs, and peruse the chaos around us, the reality has finally hit. It is happening, we’ve rented out our house, we’re leaving in less than a week !! It’s been a fast moving, and incredibly frustrating couple of weeks!  A week ago, we were still in limbo and being increasingly frustrated by prospective tenants. We had a lovely Welsh couple come round, adored the house, said they wanted it, then disappeared. They were quickly followed by a single guy, […]

A New Year, and time’s moving so fast.

Happy New Year everybody, we hope 2017 brings happiness and health to you and all of your family. As we lay in bed on New Years day talking about the year ahead, we reflected on the fundamental change that we’re about to take in the way we live. We’re conditioned from an early age to build a stable home and fill it with better and nicer stuff;  this year we’re throwing that conformity out of the window and taking our lives in a completely new direction. We’ll still have a home, albeit […]

He’s arrived – It’s a boy!

Ladies and Gentlemen………Introducing “Elton“, our new Carado T449 Motorhome. He weighed in at 7.4m long,  rated at 3.850 tons …….and he’s just beautiful After what seems an endless wait, but in reality was only about eight weeks, we finally picked up our new Motorhome from CamperUK in Lincoln today. We’ve had such a fun day today going over the whole van with the engineers, seeing how everything works, and tonight we’ve come down to CamperUK’s own leisure park where we’re trying out all the gadgets and making sure we’re happy […]

Time is marching on

9 Weeks to go. Two weeks since our last blog, and just nine weeks before vacate our house at the end of January. It’s been a very busy two weeks with house clearance, decorating and family stuff, but there’s no major milestones and no big changes to report. The house is starting to look empty in a few places, most of the obvious junk and stuff that we or the family don’t want has gone The house is still up for rental No takers yet unfortunately and we don’t realistically expect […]

A quiet week, and a disappointment

It’s a bit hard to write a blog when there’s not much happened to write about. When we’re off travelling, there’ll be things happening most days, but this week has been relatively quiet with no major events. What should have been the biggest event for the week was the “open hour” for the house viewing, when prospective tenants could come and look around the house. Checking in with the estate agents on Friday, after we’d spent a lot of time making the house look beautiful, revealed that nobody had registered […]

16 weeks to go…or is it 12

The house went out on the rental market this week – that was a scary reality check seeing the details out there on the internet waiting for a prospective renter. We’ve been assuming Carol giving up work at the end of February, but we realised this week if someone wanted to rent the house from the start of February, Carol could give up work a month earlier and financially we’d be no worse off. That sent us into an even bigger tailspin potentially cutting four weeks out of our sixteen […]
